Savoring the Southwest Again
Published in Hardcover by Roswell Symphony Guild Publications (September, 1998)
Average review score:

Outstanding community cookbookThis all volunteer effort benefiting the Roswell Symphony is an outstanding book to be savored and enjoyed for years to come. The recipes are wonderful examples of Southwestern cuisine at its best, both gourmet and everyday fare. The art work is provocative and unique to the Southwest, featuring some of todays finest working Southwestern artists. The UFO section (Ungourmet and Unusual Food Offerings) is done with tongue in cheek. Recipes for "Twilight Zone Pinto Bean Fudge", "Crash Site Chicken Chowder" and "The Great Cover Up Barbeque Sauce" are not only delicious but fun and amusing. Dion Crosby, former Executive Director of the UFO Museum wrote the forward for this section presenting data on the "1947 Roswell Incident".
An abundance of bean, grain and rice recipes (try the Black Bean Torta), inventive ways with fresh vegetables and pastas with a southwestern twist as well as different and unusual meat recipes including game and ostrich are all wonderful and original.
In my opinion, this is one of the best community cookbooks to be published in a long time; one everyone can enjoy, cook from, and just read for pleasure.

Scats and Tracks of the Desert Southwest
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (September, 2000)
Average review score:

excellent book!!I found this book to be informative and very user friendly, especially since it is hand held size, making easy to take into the field. Halfpenny also gives accurate measurements of track size and gait patterns for each species and a brief description of the animals. In addition, there is a strong emphasis on the scat of each species with very detail drawings. There is also a section on the tracks of various bird species. a must for everyone interested in tracking in the southwest.

Secret Tibet
Published in Hardcover by Harvill Pr (January, 2001)
Average review score:

An exceptionally fine book be an extraordinary human being.Even though he never made it to Lhasa, which was off-limits to outsiders when this book was written, Secret Tibet is the most informative & insightful book on Tibet's history, culture & religions I have ever read, a rich & rewarding experience, the best of all books I've read on Tibet (& I believe I've read them all). Fosco Maraini was an exceptional human being, compassionate, highly intelligent, & he wrote with poetic elegance. He was a top ethnologist, a skilled photographer, an expert mountain climber and above all, an extraordinary human being with an amazing understanding of human behavior at all levels. All of his books should be in print & read. He wrote extraordinary books on Mountain Climbing, Pearl Divers in Japan, & above all, on Japan: Meeting With Japan, one of the most amazing books I have ever read. I recommend him to anyone & everyone. You'll never regret reading him.

Secrets of the StoneGorgeous illustrations, beautiful story. This book is well worth the money. Only a warning - references to "ghostly spirits" and "spirit world".

Seedtime on the Cumberland
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (November, 1995)
Average review score:

A classic on the history of the Cumberland ValleyThis is my favorite book on early life along the Cumberland Valley (Middle Tennessee and lower Central Kentucky), especially after getting past Chapter One, which is an imaginary narration of an "early adventure" which seemed unnecessary. That is a small complaint though. The book has some really interesting information on all aspects of settlement of the area and I highly recommend it! Many of the details described are applicable to pioneer life in other areas east of the Mississippi as well, I would think.

Selden Lindsey U.S. Deputy Marshall
Published in Paperback by Paragon Pub (October, 1994)
Average review score:

The life of a forgotten western heroThis is a facinating account about one of the forgotten figures in old west history.I bought this book out of curiosity and found that I couldn't put it down untill I was finished. I began the book prepared to disbelieve what was written, especialy when I realized it was written by the grandson of Lindsey. My fears were soon laid to rest as I found McCullough to be an honest and entertaining historian. The death of Bill Dalton and the facts he presents to support his version of the famous outlaws death are impressive. In the end I found myself wishing for two things. The first is that Lindsey's earlier years driving cattle, hunting bufallo, anf facing the Comanche were better detailed. the second is that I could have met the remarkable man.
